Itinerary Highlights:

1. Dovecot Studio
Step inside the creative world of Dovecot Studios, Edinburgh’s renowned center for contemporary tapestry and textile art. Housed in a beautifully restored Victorian swimming pool, Dovecot is home to working tapestry weavers who continue Scotland’s rich tradition of handwoven textiles.

2. Holyrood Palace Tour
Experience the grandeur of the Palace of Holyroodhouse, the official Scottish residence of the British monarch. Explore the royal apartments, the Holyrood Abbey ruins, and beautiful gardens.

3. Woolly Good Gathering

As a highlight of our knitting adventure in Edinburgh, we’ll attend a celebrated yarn and fiber festival dedicated to the art of making. Browse an inspiring marketplace of independent vendors, participate in hands-on workshops, hear from leading fiber experts, enjoy live music, and connect with fellow knitters, crocheters, spinners, and weavers in a warm and creative atmosphere. This unforgettable event showcases the best of Scotland’s thriving fiber community while offering endless inspiration for makers of all skill levels.

4. Gansey Sweater Class with Di Gilpin and Sheila Greenwell

Spend time with renowned British knitwear designers Di Gilpin and Sheila Greenwell exploring the rich history and distinctive construction of traditional Gansey sweaters. Gansey knitting is deeply rooted in the fishing communities of the British Isles, where these hard-wearing sweaters were designed to keep fishermen warm and protected from the harsh conditions at sea.

During this hands-on class, you’ll learn about the history and traditions behind ganseys, examine traditional construction techniques, and explore the details that make these sweaters so distinctive. Di and Sheila will share their knowledge of gansey design and knitting, including traditional stitch patterns, shaping, and construction methods.

This is a wonderful opportunity to learn about an important part of British knitting heritage while developing techniques you can incorporate into your own knitting. You’ll leave with a deeper appreciation for the craftsmanship and stories woven into these iconic sweaters. For the class you will need US size 3 (3.25mm) Double Point needles or 16″.
Excursions:

1. New Lanark World Heritage Site
Take a step back in time at New Lanark, a beautifully restored 18th-century mill village and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Discover its rich history in textiles and the iconic New Lanark Wool and Yarn store.

2. Lochcarron of Scotland
Visit Lochcarron of Scotland, one of the world’s leading manufacturers of tartan and textiles. Witness the intricate process behind their famous weaves and immerse yourself in the artistry of traditional Scottish textiles.

Who makes travel arrangements? You make your own flight arrangements from a major airport near you. Driving may be an option depending on your location.

What airport should I fly into? Edinburgh has an international airport, but your chosen airline may not fly there. Trains throughout the UK make getting to Edinburgh reasonable from other cities. However, knitters may like to arrive a few days early to take in sights in London or other cities in the UK and to adjust to the time change. Research what works best for you.

How do I get from the airport or train station to our lodging? The train station is walking distance, and cabs are available from there for about 6 pounds. Cabs from the airport will run about 30 pounds, and Sky Link or Air Link bus services will bring you to downtown for under 5 pounds. From the bus drop off, Georgian Town House is about four blocks or a short cab ride. Bus drivers are very helpful in advising you as to the best stops.

April 3- Saturday-Day 3: Breakfast, Georgian Town House, The Woolly Good Gathering ,
April 4-Sunday-Day 4: Breakfast, Georgian Town House, Knitting, shopping and free time, lunch on your own, dinner.

April 5-Monday-Day 5: Breakfast, classes at the historic Georgian Town House, lunch, On Off Bus, visit Dovecot and visit Holyrood House Tour, dinner
April 6-Tuesday-Day 6: Breakfast, class with Di Gilpin and Sheila Greenwell. Learn about gansey sweaters.
April 7-Wednesday -Day 7:Breakfast, Georgian Town House, Locharron, lunch, shopping and tour dinner
April 8-Thursday-Day 8: Breakfast, Georgian Town House, Departure

The policy for traveling with a group of knitters on a knitting trip focuses on ensuring that participants can safely and enjoyably engage in the activities planned. So before signing up for the trip please make sure you are able to do the following activities.

One must have the ability to walk one to three miles at a reasonable pace without becoming short of breath, experience cramping or find that this exacerbates a medical condition. It is important for participating in various activities during the trip, such as exploring new locations, visiting local yarn shops, or enjoying scenic walks. 

Many travel destinations may involve stairs, whether in accommodations, venues, or during excursions. Participants should  be able to climb several flights of stairs, as this enhances mobility and independence during the trip. You must also be able to carry luggage you bring up any stair in our accommodation.

While travel can be a rewarding experience, it often comes with considerable mental demands. Make sure you can cope with travel delays, navigating through crowded airports, changes in environment.

We aims to create an enjoyable and enriching experience for all participants. By considering these abilities, the trip can be tailored to foster camaraderie, creativity, and a sense of community among the knitters, ensuring that everyone has the opportunity to make wonderful memories together.
