Bergen, located on Norway’s west coast, has a rich history shaped by trade, seafaring, and its strategic position between fjords and the North Sea.
Bergen was founded around 1070 by King Olav Kyrre. It quickly grew into one of Norway’s most even serving as the country’s capital during the Middle Ages. Its natural harbor made it ideal for fishing and trade, especially in dried cod.
German merchants established a trading quarter called Bryggen, which is still preserved today as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. During this time, Bergen was Norway’s largest and most internationally connected city.
Today, Bergen is Norway’s second-largest city, famous for its scenic surroundings, maritime heritage, and role as a gateway to the fjords.
