Strikkeferie (Knitting Holiday)
In partnership with Strikkeferie, we’re offering Knitting Holiday Romsdal in Andalsnes, Norway. Absolutely beautiful, settled in a valley at the tip of fjords, Andalsnes is also home to Rauma Wool mill, Norway’s leading yarn maker. We’re hosting knitters with a focus on Norwegian knitting. This trip includes visits to Rauma Wool Mill, an historic sheep farm, a felting workshop, and Norway’s only winery. Enjoy a cooking class, related activities, sightseeing, and discovering the natural beauty of the area in addition to the knitting workshops held in a historic restored one-room schoolhouse. Workshops and tours are in English.
You won’t feel like a tourist on this trip, rather like a cousin or friend visiting for the first time. Experience home-cooked traditional Norwegian meals, superior hospitality that is the hallmark of the Norwegian people, and events that connect you directly with the people, culture, knitting, and food of this part of Norway.

The Experience
What to Expect
Norway
Visits to Rauma wool mill, related activities, sightseeing and discovering the natural beauty of the area in addition to the knitting workshops held in a historic, restored one-room schoolhouse.
Romsdal, the district within which the town of Andalsnes resides, is home to several of Norway’s most beautiful attractions: Romsdalseggen, Trollwall, Trollstigen, Romsdalstrappa and Rauma Railway. See the websites for Visit Andalsnes and Romsdal.
Enjoy this unique environment with beautiful natural scenery, surrounded by mountains and fresh clean mountain air. We’ll visit a working sheep farm, feel the pure Norwegian wool and visit the yarn shop at Rauma Ullvarefabrikk for inspiration and projects. See yarn being produced and Norwegian sweaters on the machines at one of the only places to produce 100% Norwegian wool.
Kniting workshops will be held at “Skolestua,” a schoolhouse from 1827. Skolestua is situated on Bakke farm with view towards the mountains. The house was restored in 2010 and is frequently let by tourists. For the week, it’s all about knitting.
Different activities are arranged according to the season, weather and personal preferences. We’ll visit Norway’s only winery, a felting workshop, and have a cooking class at an historic landmark sheep farm.
Plan for a short hike to the viewpoint Rampestreken, hiking along the mountain rivers, having lunch outdoors and visiting local places like Tuen vineyard, Sødahlhuset, Haun’håndlaga, Rosvang gaard. Won’t it be fun to discover what all of this means!
Bring clothes for casual activities and hiking/walking shoes. You may also want slippers for indoors.

Program
We’ll explore two-color Norwegian knitting. With Norwegian instructors, learn about the variations and nuance of knitting in this tradition.
Workshops will be held at “Skolestua” – a schoolhouse from 1827. Skolestua is situated on Bakke farm with a view towards the mountains. A different kind of paradise.

Yarn is provided for your two-color knitting project — lovely Norwegian yarn, of course. Please bring US11/8mm, 32″ circular needles and basic supplies: tapestry needle, markers and scissors.
Of course, bring your other knitting projects to share and work on. And — they have knitting needles in Norway (!) if you need something that you didn’t bring..
Lodging

The hotel is located at the foot of Romsdalseggen and the majestic Romsdalstinde. The history of the hotel goes back to 1890. Since then, the hotel has been through both fire, rebuilding and scattered renovations. In 1890, the hotel had approximately the same location as today and Åndalsnes mainly consisted of the farms Aandal and Nes.
